Campfire

Pull up a log. These are the stories that don't fit in case files or travel records — the ones that only come out after the sun goes down.

The circle is open

In Panchal there is a banyan old enough to have opinions.

Its aerial roots have come down so thick that they form rooms — actual rooms, with walls of root and a ceiling of canopy. Someone said you could do yoga in there. This was meant as a joke.

At sunrise the joke was tested. Surya namaskar inside a living building, light coming through in coins, the tree creaking like an old house settling around its guests.

No photograph from that morning came out right, which feels correct. Some rooms you can only describe.

More stories surface every time the fire is lit. Some are still being retold properly — first drafts burn easily.
